A MI PATRIA Goes to UP Diliman




Last February 3, UP Film Center was flocked by students, professors, advocates Deaf and Hearing alike to watch A MI PATRIA, a collection of five poems of Dr. Jose Rizal in four languages: Filipino Sign Language [FSL], English, Spanish, and Filipino. The film provides the Deaf Community with access to the important works of our National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal. It also gives the hearing community the chance to experience the beauty of Filipino Sign Language.

This is the first-ever translation of the poems in sign language Directed and Edited by Mirana Medina in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies and the University of the Philippines-Koleyiho ng Arte at Kultura.

Mr. Jose Rizal Lopez, grandson of Paciano Rizal and accompanied by Ms. Ester Asurin, was the guest honor who candidly shared stories before the screening about how the National Hero was calm in the hour of death; without a shred of hate or anger in his famous Mi Ultimo Adios, one of the poems featured in the screening. 

Also present were Ms. Liza Tinio-Bayot, descendant of the Rizal Family; Prof. Vim Nadera with friends of filmmaker/director Mirana Medina; and members of the Philippine Federation of the Deaf (PFD), Filipino Deaf Women's Health and Crisis Center (FDWHCC) and Support and Empower Abused Deaf Chjldren, Inc. (SEADC).

SDEAS Athletes are Overall Champions in 27th Rotaract Sportsfest


De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde's School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (DLS-CSB SDEAS) students were the Overall Champions of the 27th New Generation Sportsfest for Rotaract and Interact at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex Track Oval last February 3, 2013.




Led by SDEAS Alumna and Deaf Sports Program Trainor Lovella Catalan, they were the only Deaf representatives who competed with other hearing schools in games such as the 8x50m / 4x100m relays, tug of war, and obstacle course with the support of volunteer interpreters.

This annual sportsfest sponsored by the Rotary Club of University District Manila (RCUDM) aims to build friendships and encourage good sportsmanship among young athletes.
